F-106A "Delta Dart" Fighter / Interceptor



Serving on display at K.I. Sawyer is tail number 56-0461

 

The F-106A on display is actually Serial No. 56-0461 which was assigned to the 5th FIS stationed at Minot AFB, ND. It has been painted and marked to represent Serial No. 57-0231, which was assigned to the 87th FIS stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB, MI from 1971 to 1985. This aircraft was dedicated on September 9th, 2006 to all those who supported, maintained or flew this magnificent jet.

 

The F-106 entered service in July 1959. 277 F-106A’s and 63 “B” models were built as all-weather interceptors used by the Aerospace Defense Command. In 1985, all the F-106A & B model Delta Darts were retired and reconfigured to be used as unmanned target drones. This F-106A is only one of 33 total airframes remaining.

 

The F-106A still holds the World Absolute All-Time Speed Record for a production turbojet aircraft of 1525.95 mph at 40,500 ft. over Edward’s AFB, California set December 15, 1959 by Major Joe Rogers.
